fashion advice for real people
I must say that there are relatively few pieces that cannot be somehow made to work and look great, but there are still those few styles that I just don’t get.
The Steve Madden chap has started to become quite popular, and even though I keep going back to the website and into stores to check out the shoe now named as “Steve Madden’s Most Wanted”, I still don’t see what all the fuss is about.
There are actually about 20 different versions of this shoe that Madden presently has available, some of which I will let off the hook for the time being while others I simply have to make a point about.
I don’t care who you are, you cannot tell me that these do not remind you of your professor’s worn out old shoes only with a heel stuck on the bottom.
I tried, I really did, to come up with any possible outfit that this shoe could even remotely look decent with, and there was nothing.
Unless you are dressing up as a senior citizen for Halloween, I can’t imagine why anyone would like these shoes - sorry Steve.
Then there is also the Shawnee, which really does a disservice to the moccasin.
Talk about bland and boring - I usually love Steve’s designs, a combination of youth and sophistication, but with these I have to say he has gone off track.
Maybe if there was a higher heel or the fringe and string were scrapped … maybe not. What do you think?
New York Bridal Week wound down on Friday, with most editors fatigued and hoping that they never again have to see another white dress.
Okay so maybe it was not all that bad but editors were definitely exhausted, although all agree that it was more than worth it to check out some of the latest and greatest in bridal fashions.
Vera Wang was one of my personal favorites for this bridal wear fashion week, where she offered 32 gorgeous different bridal gowns, all exquisite in their own right.
Vera Wang was born to design wedding dresses. She always gets everything perfect in a dress from start to finish, from the draping and color to the length and embellishment.

There were many other designers who displayed their new bridal designs during this year’s New York Bridal Week, including Reem Acra, Carolina Herrera, Elizabeth Filmore, Monique Lhullier, and Oscar de la Renta.
If you are interested in viewing the complete showcase for yourself you can check out New York Weddings for the full story.
If you have ever watched the hit TV show What Not to Wear, you have seen makeup artist Charmindy applying aerosol spray foundation to the nominees.
A revelation in beauty, this is definitely one of the newest breakthrough advancements in the cosmetics world, and one that definitely caught my interest.
The foundation that Charmindy uses is called ERA Face. It is the first and only patented spray-on foundation that combines long lasting color with a state of the art delivery system.

Applying your foundation has never been easier, and the spray delivery ensures that your face is coated evenly and that there are no unsightly spots or lines.
As stated on La Te Da Beauty Bar:
ERA Face is lightweight, fast and virtually mistake-proof. It contains light diffusing pigments to enhance the skin’s natural healthy glow. ERA Face provides sheer minimal coverage for a natural, less made-up look. For maximum coverage, color can be seamlessly layered to provide completely opaque results while still using minimal product.
With ERA Face you get head to toe perfection, as it can be used not only on the face but also the entire body if you want to cover up scars, moles, or other problem areas on your skin.
It can even completely cover up tattoos, varicose veins, stretchmarks, and skin discolorations.
The foundation is water resistant so it will not rub off on clothing or come off when it gets wet, and yet it can be easily removed with mild soap or a gentle makeup remover.
There are many other advantages offered by the ERA Face foundation as well, including that it is good for the skin. Its unique formulation helps the skin by providing it with vital moisture without clogging pores.
It contains ingredients such as aloe vera and chamomile which means that foundation is not heavy like other makeup, allowing the skin to breathe as a result.
ERA Face is available through a number of retailers, including Amazon, The Shopping Channel, and various other retailers for anywhere from $30-$70 USD.
Some people idolize Victoria Beckham’s style while others go into a frenzy when they see that she continues to make one “Best Dressed” list after another.
Either way it is safe to say that she is not going to have much success with her clothing line, as it was dumped soon after it was released.
Kitson and Fred Segal have dumped Beckham’s line after poor sales. There was also a serious lack of promotional work, as Victoria even refused to do in-store promotions to advertise her line, which definitely did not help things any.

As reported on Holly Scoop, Fraser Ross, owner of Kitson, says that:
We asked her PR people so many times for her to appear but she didn’t. Celebrity lines are no different from an album or music tour. They have to be promoted to sell.
To some people this news is sad, while others are thrilled. Apart from her time with the Spice Girls, I think Victoria Beckham’s style is quite stylish and pretty, and she looks darn good after having two kids.
With her lack of promotional work however, whether it be due to laziness or ignorance, it is only expected that her entrepreneurial efforts here would fail.
Glamour Magazine has recently released their top ten favorite female celebrity fashionistas. Right at the top of the list as number one is Kate Moss.

Said Jo Elvin, editor of Glamour:
Kate’s back with a vengeance. Her maverick approach to fashion is an inspiration and shows us all how to be a little more daring and experimental.
As posted on the Damn I’m Cute blog, the rest of the list went as follows:
• Sienna Miller
• Scarlett Johansson
• Rachael Bilson
• Jennifer Aniston
• Alexa Chung
• Reese Witherspoon
• Jessica Alba
• Keira Knightley
• Victoria Beckham
Each of these women is well deserving of her place on the list, although there are a few that I think should have been included as well, like Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum and Charlize Theron.
All women will know what I am talking about when I say how hard it can be to find just the right mascara.
Depending on how long your lashes are to begin with, how dramatic of a look you want, what color your lashes and hair are…whew!
That is only the beginning, because then you head out to the store only to find hundreds of different little mascara bottles in packages staring back at you. It can be quite intimidating and usually a waste of time anyway because you finally decide on one only to get home and realize that it works nothing like how you thought it would.
I have definitely tried out more than enough mascaras in my life and am happy to say that I have now found the perfect one.

Revlon 3D Extreme Mascara is definitely my top pick, a mascara that I am happy to continue buying and using.
It offers everything that I want from a mascara. It is light enough to wear a single coat throughout the day without clumping or drying out and yet dramatic enough when you apply a second coat to wear when you are going out for the night.
The mascara wand and brush are smaller than those on mascaras I have used in the past, and so I have to admit that when I first took a look at this teensy thing I almost wanted to go get my ten bucks back right then.
I gave it a try though, and had no regrets after that. Good things really do come in small packages, because this wee little brush is designed - and actually works - to coat each lash, keeping the lashes separate from each other and preventing sticking and clumping.
The Revlon 3D Extreme Mascara, developed by one of my favorite makeup brands Revlon, is a treasure and is definitely the mascara I will be keeping in my makeup bag from now on.
I am not the only one that thinks so either, as some of my favorite sister sites such as Associated Content, Makeup Moxie and Epinions all also had great things to say about it.
Although I am not one to follow the trends of celebrities necessarily, there are a few that I like to keep my eye on. Not because they are imitating what everyone else is wearing at the time in Hollywood, but rather because they have their own unique, funky flair.
Angelina Jolie definitely fits into this category, at least for me, and in my opinion she is not only one of the most beautiful women in the world but one with the best style as well.
Ok, so we are not all going to be able to copy that hot leather number she wore in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but there are many of her stylish fashions that we can take ideas from, and yet keep our own style and individuality as well.
One of the things I love most about Angelina is how she can completely transform, from devilish vixen to ladylike and feminine and she suits both styles to absolute perfection. I know, I know, she could be wearing a paper bag and make it look vogue, but it doesn’t take a fashion pro to look at this woman and see that she has true style.
One of Jolie’s most memorable red carpet moments was in 2007 during one of her first public appearances with beau Brad Pitt. It was at the Golden Globes that she showed up in an elegant and demure strapless St. John couture gown, and looked absolutely stunning.
You can find variations of this dress for cheap at boutiques around the world, in the event that you are an average person like myself who cannot afford to pay more for a dress than you did for your mortgage.
Remember to keep your accessories light, as you rarely ever see Angelina with a load of jewelry on her arms or other pieces distracting from her outfit. Focus on the staple of your outfit and then use a few pieces to accent it, such as a knit shrug or a small diamond bracelet.
Today Angelina is considered as being a Hollywood glamour icon to many, myself included, and more than anything it is her sincerity and confidence that gives her this undeniable, unavoidable allure and beauty.
If you want to get a little more Angelina Jolie-ish yourself, here are a few tips that will help. First and foremost though, you need to feel confident because this will shine through and make anything you wear stand out.
Think of long, lean fashions that will show off your feminine curves, because these are the types of clothes that Angelina tends to stick to. Her clothes are always womanly and pretty but without ever crossing the line of matronly.
She wears a lot of caramel and gold colored clothing, which is no wonder because these hues go so well with her golden bronze skin. Finish off with a simple black dress and cute heels, an outfit she is infamous for, and a pair of big dark shades and you will have a few pieces in your wardrobe that will have you as sexy and saucy as Angelina herself and ready to hit the town.
So the summer season is fast approaching and what better way to start it off than by buying your first bathing suit of the year.
There are some fantastic new trends in bathing suits this year, and as reported on one of the leading fashion websites, Suite101:
New York Runway trends for African inspired tribal and jungle prints can be seen in the new collections. Victoria’s Secret Designer Collections include a Red Carter Giraffe cut-out one-piece and a sexy Tiger print & dots push-up tankini top.
Colors and prints are really all the rage for the upcoming swimsuit season, and also, from the runways of Milan we are seeing a lot of geometric prints featured heavily on tops and bottoms.
Of course bikinis are still as popular as ever, and they seem to just keep getting smaller and smaller. So it is then not surprising that tiny bikins giving minimum coverage are in this season, however one new aspect that has not really been covered yet is the reversible bikini.
Many swimwear retailers are now offering reversible bikinis. This is a really cute idea and gives you two bathing suits for the price of one. FigLeaves is one of the most popular companies now offering these hip bikinis, so be sure to check them out.
Embellishments on bathing suits are also very in this year:
This season’s trend of “embellishments” which proliferate dresses, shoes and handbags are carried through into swimwear. Fringes, appliqué, beads and bows can be seen adorning swimsuit bottoms and tops.
The new swimwear trends for this year are dramatic and yet subtle all at the same time, but all make a statement in their own right.
Also don’t forget about the many fabulous Australian designers that are making their mark in the swimwear world, such as Zimmermann and Seafolly.
So the Junos were last night, and I was really thrilled for it, considering that Canada is my home country and I am proud that talent like Feist, Michael Buble, Triumph, and Finger Eleven all hail from the Great White North.
More than anything I was excited to see what everyone was wearing, and there were some really great and not so great outfits.
Okay, okay, so the Canadian award shows do not exactly stand up to the Hollywood-esque Grammys, Tonys, and Academy Awards of the United States, but I was really not worried about the glitz and glamor of it.

On a personal note I favor the Canadian award shows in a way because everyone is so laid back and relaxed - one of the members from Wintersleep, the band that celebrated their Juno win for New Group of the Year, actually even brought a coffee on stage with him to accept the award. I have to say I loved it.
Now on to the outfits. The star of the night, Feist, who I think was more than deserving of her five awards, looked absolutely adorable.
She switched into a few different outfits throughout the night, but each showed her unique, funky eclectic style and I thought they all looked perfect on her.
Avril Lavigne stuck to her usual punk-pop look, dressed in a black dress with white polka dots and coordinated shoes. She was more dressed up than I’ve seen her before, but without going too far out of her element.

So maybe it wasn’t the most elegant ensemble but she still looked super cute, and you could tell she was having a lot of fun and not taking any of it too seriously, hamming it up for the camera and carrying around her little streamer stick.
I have to add in Mr. Michael Buble here who looked as handsome as ever at the awards show last night. Not only does he have one of the most beautiful voices I have heard since Fred Astaire but he also dresses to the max.
For the most part the styles were pretty dull, with the majority of presenters and performers wearing basic black and no one really standing out.
Overall it was still a good show, one that I really enjoyed watching. It was laid back and relaxed, good ole Canada style.
